Diamonds for Peace’s commitment to responsible diamond mining extends to fostering sustainable livelihoods in the areas where we have projects. Liberia’s forests, a part of the Guinean Forest of West Africa and considered as biodiversity hot spot, are vital ecosystems that support biodiversity and mitigate climate change. By investing in reforestation, we can demonstrate that the diamond industry can contribute to both environmental conservation and economic development.
For just USD 12, you can help us plant a tree in Liberia, fight against climate change and protect a precious ecosystem. In addition, your donation will enable artisanal miners to increase their income through sustainable forestry practices (e.g. growing seedlings, regular watering, and the produce they can grow), thereby helping them to obtain legal mining licenses to sell their diamonds on the legitimate market. This will not only reduce illegal mining and diamond smuggling but also provide a more sustainable livelihood for miners and their families.
Additionally, reforestation projects will help improve soil quality, prevent erosion, and absorb carbon dioxide, playing a crucial role in mitigating climate change. Moreover, these restored forests will provide local communities with essential resources such as firewood, timber, non-timber forest products, and healthy fruits, enhancing their overall quality of life.
As a token of our gratitude, all donors will receive a personalized tree certificate and a photo of their planted tree. As a special thank you, donors who contribute 20 trees (USD240) or more will have their name placed on a small plaque at the planting site (DFP will contact you after your donation). This is a wonderful way to leave a lasting legacy and support our reforestation efforts.
Our goal is to plant 10,000 trees over the next five years (2025 to 2030), empowering local communities and securing a greener future.
The artisanal diamond miners in Weasua who want to mine legally are excited about the program. This is because the artisanal diamond mining license fee in Liberia has increased to USD250 per year in January 2025, which is a lot of burden for them.
Initially five miners who are members of the cooperative join the program and more and more miners will join as the donation increases.
We are looking forward to hearing from you!
