* On this Human Rights Day, we reflect on Article * On this Human Rights Day, we reflect on Article 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which affirms: "Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of themselves and their family, including food, clothing, housing, medical care, and necessary social services, as well as security in cases of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age, or other circumstances beyond their control." In Liberia’s impoverished mining regions, Diamonds for Peace works to help communities understand these rights and take steps toward achieving them. * "Safe toilets for all by 2030” is a core targe * "Safe toilets for all by 2030” is a core target of Sustainable Development Goal 6, yet, according to recent UN data, 3.5 billion people still lack access to safely managed sanitation, with 419 million practicing open defecation. Diamonds for Peace has launched educational programs within small mining communities in Liberia, raising awareness on the health risks associated with poor hygiene. This year, thanks to generous support from Ikuo Shibuya, Tota Koyama (@totakoyama), @tokyopearl_official, and Japan Fund for Global Environment (@erca_kikin), we’ve renovated toilet facilities at the only school in Weasua. * Since September 2022, DFP has been supporting ag * Since September 2022, DFP has been supporting agroforestry activity for miners to have economic benefit on reclaimed mines and to diversify miners’ income sources in cooperation with a Liberian agroforestry expert. The site for agroforestry was an abandoned diamond mine. About its 70% is reclaimed and the rest of the site has been left overgrown with grass. In the photo, the cooperative members are cutting the grass to prepare for the agroforestry field. Projections indicate monthly temperatures could rise by 3.2°C by the 2080s, potentially exceeding a 4.8°C increase by century’s end. Liberia faces heightened vulnerability due to high poverty levels and its reliance on climate-sensitive sectors like mining.
