* On December 4, the Diamonds for Peace team, toge * On December 4, the Diamonds for Peace team, together with Esther Finda Kandeh, Founder and Director of Women on Mining and Extractives Sierra Leone (WoME SL), visited GemFair (@gemfair) Sierra Leone. One detail that stood out was the use of circular sieves by Sierra Leonean miners. They explained that the circular shape helps diamonds move toward the center, making them easier to spot and reducing the risk of theft. In Liberia, miners traditionally use square sieves, so this insight is something we will introduce in our mining cooperatives. * Improving sanitation is a core part of Diamonds * Improving sanitation is a core part of Diamonds for Peace’s mission to enhance the livelihoods of miners in Liberian villages. In most of the mining communities in Liberia, open defecation is a big problem because the majority of community members don't have toilets in their homes. In Weasua with DFP’s support, the community built 2 new public toilet facilities and renovated a public school toilet, providing cleaner and safer conditions for 700 people. * On December 4, the Diamonds for Peace team, toge * On December 4, the Diamonds for Peace team, together with Esther Finda Kandeh, Founder and Director of Women on Mining and Extractives Sierra Leone (WoME SL), visited GemFair (@gemfair) Sierra Leone. We extend our thanks to the GemFair team, led by Steve Allan, for their warm welcome and for sharing their knowledge with such openness. During our time there, we learned in detail about their operations, including establishing formal agreements with artisanal diamond mining license holders, training programs on safety and other essential topics, the Forward Purchase Program that offers miners access to fair financing, their approach to land reclamation and agriculture, and the tools they use to support traceability in the diamond supply chain. We also visited one of their mine sites where we saw firsthand the progress being made in a country where diamonds once fuelled civil conflict. It is encouraging to see a company working toward positive change in these communities. * This week, COP30 on Climate Change opens in Belém, Brazil. A recent World Bank study highlights that Liberia is particularly vulnerable to climate change due to its economy’s dependence on natural resources. The report warns that without action, climate change could shrink Liberia’s economy by 15 percent and push 1.3 million people into poverty by 2050. Liberia’s forestry, mining, and agriculture sectors face intertwined challenges and opportunities in sustainable land management. At Diamonds for Peace, we are contributing in our own way by educating mining villages on sustainable land practices.
