* "Safe toilets for all by 2030” is a core targe * "Safe toilets for all by 2030” is a core target of Sustainable Development Goal 6, yet, according to recent UN data, 3.5 billion people still lack access to safely managed sanitation, with 419 million practicing open defecation. Diamonds for Peace has launched educational programs within small mining communities in Liberia, raising awareness on the health risks associated with poor hygiene. This year, thanks to generous support from Ikuo Shibuya, Tota Koyama (@totakoyama), @tokyopearl_official, and Japan Fund for Global Environment (@erca_kikin), we’ve renovated toilet facilities at the only school in Weasua. * Since September 2022, DFP has been supporting ag * Since September 2022, DFP has been supporting agroforestry activity for miners to have economic benefit on reclaimed mines and to diversify miners’ income sources in cooperation with a Liberian agroforestry expert. The site for agroforestry was an abandoned diamond mine. About its 70% is reclaimed and the rest of the site has been left overgrown with grass. In the photo, the cooperative members are cutting the grass to prepare for the agroforestry field. Projections indicate monthly temperatures could rise by 3.2°C by the 2080s, potentially exceeding a 4.8°C increase by century’s end. Liberia faces heightened vulnerability due to high poverty levels and its reliance on climate-sensitive sectors like mining. There is no public trash collection service and the local people are not accustomed to collecting garbage or tossing it in designated places. *(Repost from DFP Linkedin) ✨ Exciting Highlight *(Repost from DFP Linkedin) ✨ Exciting Highlights from the The Jewellery Show London! ✨ On September 2nd, Beth West represented Diamonds for Peace in a special session on “Peace Diamonds and Peace Gold.” Thank you to moderator Vivien Johnston Glass and fellow panelist Greg Valerio MBE, Founding Director & CEO of PeaceGold™, along with our engaged audience. We explored the impact of Diamonds for Peace (DFP) in supporting miners in Liberia and preparation of the mine to market program to address challenges faced by artisanal miners, including dependency on unlicensed investors and lack of valid licenses. The program will: Certify mining teams committed to responsible practices. Provide a due diligence tool for buyers focused on ethical sourcing. DFP has been laying the groundwork for this program with key community initiatives: 🔹 Beekeeping: Miners often struggle financially, preventing them from affording mining licenses or their own mining projects. Beekeeping offers an alternative income source and raises awareness of environmental conservation, a critical step towards financial independence from local exploitative investors. 🔹 Agroforestry: To address abandoned mining pits, DFP has introduced agroforestry, providing miners with a sustainable economic benefit and encouraging land reclamation. 🔹 Hygiene Promotion: DFP has built and renovated public toilet facilities, organized workshops on waste management, and established a Hygiene Promotion Committee that leads monthly community clean-up campaigns. While it may seem unrelated to mining, DFP believes health and safety should begin in the community to build a foundation for responsible mining.
